This week we are celebrating Afternoon Tea Week! Afternoon Tea may be seen as a British institution that has always been around, but did you know that it was first introduced to Britain in the 1840’s. It evolved as a mini meal to stem the hunger and anticipation of an evening meal at 8pm. Although 'Afternoon Tea' traditionally has been a meal composed of sandwiches (usually cut delicately into 'fingers'), scones with clotted cream and jam, sweet pastries and cakes, more recently it has evolved to include more contemporary twists including sliders and street food snacks as operators respond to increasing consumer demand for more exciting flavour combinations and experiences.
Food Spark shared that in a study of over 2,000 UK consumers, one in ten want burritos served alongside traditional petit fours, confirming consumers are seeking out more adventurous twists on the classic ‘cuppa’.
Below we have shared a selection of recipes that could create both a classic and quirky Afternoon Tea.
