As inflation sends the cost of ingredients spiralling, schools are concerned that without additional funding from the government they may have to increase the price of school meals next term, however they are very reluctant to add to the mounting financial pressures families are already facing.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Andrew Selley, Chief Executive of Bidfood said that “baked goods are currently up to 30% more expensive due to rising wheat prices, which will impact pasta, eggs and chicken in the near future”. He went on to explain that the price of sunflower oil has also “doubled against a year ago” due to the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He then said, “The situation is going to lead to some difficult decisions for school caterers, either they will have to serve smaller portions or use cheaper ingredients, which is not going to be good for children”.
In addition to the rising ingredient costs, energy costs are also continuing to soar. Prices are seen to be rising by 7% a year in the UK – the highest rate for 30 years according to the BBC.
