At Essential Cuisine, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a core principle that guides every aspect of how we source, manufacture, package, and deliver our products. Since 2020, sustainability has been embedded deeply into our business model, driving meaningful changes that reduce environmental impact while supporting chefs and foodservice professionals across the UK and beyond.
Why Remove Black Plastic?
Black plastic might seem harmless, but in reality it presents a major challenge for recycling systems. Due to the dark pigments used in its production, many recycling facilities struggle to identify black plastic with optical sorting systems. As a result, this material often ends up in landfill, undermining efforts to create a more circular economy.
By eliminating black plastic from our entire branded range, we’re taking a proactive step to reduce waste and improve recyclability across the foodservice supply chain. All our remaining plastic packaging, such as polypropylene (PP) pots, lids, and clear PET jars are fully recyclable, meaning less waste and more material recovery at end of life.
A Milestone for Sustainability
The removal of black plastic is a significant milestone for Essential Cuisine. Rather than sticking with industry norms, we redesigned our packaging formats so that every product can be more easily recycled by our customers and their waste partners.
This move not only diverts tonnes of problematic plastics from landfill, it also supports wider recycling efforts and encourages other brands to re-evaluate and improve their packaging choices.
More Than Just Packaging
Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond black plastic elimination. Across the business, we’re focused on:
· Using eco-friendly alternatives for event materials like tasting cups, cutlery, plates, and carrier bags, cutting out single-use plastics wherever possible.
· Introducing new product lines in FSC-approved cardboard packaging, such as our Premium Instant, Premium Frozen and Signature ranges, to reduce reliance on plastic.
· Reducing internal waste through improved palletisation, lower transportation emissions and a shift from printed materials to digital formats.
· Supporting good industry practices that minimise food waste and champion local, in-season ingredients.
Leading with Purpose
Sustainability isn’t something we do on the side - it’s central to how we operate. By committing to a fully recyclable packaging range and removing black plastic entirely, Essential Cuisine is contributing to a more sustainable foodservice ecosystem. We believe chefs shouldn’t have to choose between performance and environmental responsibility, and our actions demonstrate that good cookery and good environmental stewardship can go hand-in-hand.
Together, we’re not just feeding kitchens we’re helping safeguard the planet for future generations.
