Our 'turn up the heat' winner is announced!

Last month saw the launch of Essential Cuisine’s ‘turn up the heat’ competition, created to celebrate the return of catering across the foodservice industry. Chefs were asked to submit their hero summer dish to be in the chance of winning a commercial kitchen appliance of their choice up to the value of £1000.

The team in blue were completely overwhelmed by the quality of the entries – the passion and creativity really shone through. The chefs took their time to read through each recipe, and of course what the prize would mean to the entrant and their brigade – after all, the competition was designed to unlock opportunities to the winning kitchen after an incredibly tough year.

Essential Cuisine are so pleased to announce Anthony Gascoigne, Course Team Leader in the Hospitality and Catering department at North Hertfordshire College is the winner.

Senior Business Development Chef, Jon Harvey-Barnes said, “Anthony’s entry comprised of a chargrilled sirloin, dressed with a shallot and herb dressing, topped with goats cheese and chive flowers – all served on a barbequed flatbread. This dish is the epitome of summer, containing local, seasonal ingredients and advanced techniques. We were so impressed by Anthony’s commitment to his college and students and hope that this prize will support the learnings of our next generation of chefs for years to come.”

The team spoke to Anthony to tell him the news…

Anthony, what is your initial reaction to winning Essential Cuisine’s ‘Turn Up The Heat’ competition?

Overwhelmed and humbled!!

How has the pandemic effected your role and the students?

We have certainly had to adapt fast to continue to provide the best possible learning experience. Maintaining student engagement by introducing learners to chefs and industry professionals online during lockdown was critical to managing and maintaining the student's enthusiasm for the industry and craft. If anything, the pandemic has given us even more drive to continue to develop young people, increase enthusiasm, and promote hospitality as a fulfilling and lasting career.

How will your chosen piece of equipment add value to you and your team?

It will give the team the opportunity to introduce a cookery style which is not necessarily on the curriculum and in turn will enrich the student experience, develop skills, and drive employability.  

Lastly, how will you be celebrating your success?

Beers and BBQ!! 

Essential Cuisine’s team of chefs will be visiting Anthony and his students in the coming weeks to find out what piece of equipment they have chosen and how it’s impacted the students studies!
