With the increasing demands for businesses to reduce plastic pollution in the environment Essential Cuisine has been reviewing its plastic packaging formats with the aim to increase our reusable and recyclable content and reduce our total plastic usage over the coming years.
Essential Cuisine has undertaken an analysis of where we use plastic packaging and what types of materials we use.
Our White PP (Polypropylene) Plastic Pot and Clear PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate Jars are 100% recyclable and represent approximately ¾ of our total plastic usage.
We have outlined below our initial steps to achieve our aims:
White PP (Polypropylene) Plastic Pots
Essential Cuisine have just introduced our first branded product in cardboard making a firm transition to move away from our standard plastic pot and assessing its practicality from a manufacturing, transit and customer point of view in the demanding environment of Foodservice. If the trial is successful, we would look to move more products to this packaging format.
We are also conducting shelf life trials on Catering Pack size re-sealable Doy Packs as a potential alternative to our current PP plastic pots or the alternative cardboard format.
Black PP (Polypropylene) Plastic Pots
Due to the technical difficulties in recycling Black Polypropylene plastic Essential Cuisine are investigating other options in terms of different coloured fully recyclable plastics, including clear, whilst tracking technical advances in the ability to recycle black plastics and carrying out shelf life trials in Doy packs.
Black Plastic Lids
For our Black plastic lids we are taking the same approach as for out Black Plastic Pots in trialling fully recyclable plastic.
The PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) pots that we use are 100% recyclable.
We are currently researching new lower weight recyclable plastic sample pots which would reduce the amount of recyclable plastic we send out as free samples by around 60% per annum based on like for like in 2018.
Additional Initiatives in reducing Plastic
We are moving all our Sales presentation props away from plastic to Eco Friendly Compostable materials over the next few months.
Last year we used 7,000 plastic teaspoons which we are replacing with compostable starch-based teaspoons and over the 12 months to date we used 720 Black Plastic presentation bowls which we are replacing with fully compostable non- plastic products.
We have already removed the use of plastic carrier bags in the business to paper and all our support material is fully recyclable.
